Missouri has become the first state to pass a law that prohibits food manufacturers to use the word “meat” to describe a plant-based meat alternative product. The state law forbids “misrepresenting a product as meat that is not derived from harvested production livestock or poultry.” Violators may be fined $1,000 and imprisoned for a year.

Lightbulb Moment: Expect this pattern to be followed first by states that have a stake (steak) in the game, then by key gateway states, and finally the USDA will have to get involved to sort out all the nuances the states have issued. This pattern started with the feud between plant and animal milks so this shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone.
